Following the links above will display tables listing top 100, 1,000, or top 10,000 most common English words and up to five-word phrases for the selected timespan. The n-gram terminology is adopted. An n-gram is made up of a series of n 1-grams, and a 1-gram is a string of characters uninterrupted by a space. Note that a 1-gram is not necessarily a word, for it may be a number or a typo as well. Most frequently, however, a 1-gram is a word, a 2-gram is a phrase made up of two words, and a 5-gram is a phrase made up of five words. All words and phrases in the tables are linked to the Google Ngram Viewer for a 100 years into the past and future (if available) from the selected year. Tables listing top 10,000 n-grams are quite extensive and may thus load slowly. The file size for top 10,000 5-grams is approximately 11.3 MB.
